Governance

South Africa’s best-governed university

For five years in a row, the NWU has been recognised as the best-governed university in South Africa. In 2007, the University was the co-winner of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Higher Education Excellence Award for Corporate Governance. Improving on that record, the NWU was named the overall winner in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. This recognition confirms the effectiveness of the NWU’s approach to governance and leadership, which is based on the sound working relationship between the NWU Council as the governing body and management as the executive arm.

The NWU Council - governing in the best interests of the NWU community

The NWU Council sets strategic vision, direction and governance, and approves all strategic plans, budgets, policies and rules. The Council consists of 30 members, 18 of whom represent external stakeholders and 12 representing internal constituencies.

In 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011, the NWU won first place in the PricewaterhouseCoopers Higher Education Excellence Award for Corporate Governance.
