The School of Philosophy cordially invites you to a seminar by Prof Lieven Boeve
“The role of critical reflection at the university”
(Part of the Humanities Faculty Curriculum Conversations Seminar Series)
(Part of the Humanities Faculty Curriculum Conversations Seminar Series)
Topic of discussion: Whether it is funding or enrollment, there is an increasing trend within the global university system to emphasize the so-called STEM disciplines of Science, Technology, Economics, and Mathematics. As this trend increases, several universities have constricted departments within the humanities and especially so within disciplines who do qualitative research that have fewer commercial outputs. We have labeled these as ‘reflective disciplines’, such as (but not limited to) philosophy, theology, history, and literature. In this panel discussion, we will examine the changing roles of these disciplines within the university and, consequently, society at large.
