Vanderbijlpark Campus Security Enhancement Project

The NWU has set aside seed money to initiate the NWU Security Enhancement Project and will finance some of the elements of the project itself. The NWU has engaged with several stakeholders around the Vanderbijlpark Campus, including the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) to share information about the project. The ELM has given the university the green light to start planning and implementing the short-term initiatives:

Purple pedestrian routes

Purple pedestrian routes have been identified just outside the campus. The routes will include Hendrik van Eck Blvd and Andries Potgieter Blvd. These routes will be maintained by cutting the grass and security patrol.

Upgrading of the bus/taxi road

The upgrading of the bus/taxi road project, next to the Emerald Resort and Casino. To date, engineers have been appointed to do a conditional assessment and propose design solutions that will work long-term.

As a long-term plan, the university would like to install CCTV surveillance cameras as well as fix the currently damaged streetlights. The aim is to detect, deter and prevent crime by illuminating the pedestrian routes that are used by the students in the surrounding area. This is however a costly exercise that will require the involvement of many stakeholders.

Medium-term initiatives

The following medium-term initiatives have been identified:

  • The design and implementation of a webpage on the NWU’s web portal with all the relevant information of this project.
  • A sponsorship project to finance solar streetlights which will be detailed on the webpage.

The safety and upkeep of the area surrounding the NWU Vanderbijlpark Campus is not only beneficial to the university but also to the stakeholders that surround the campus. By taking hands in this initiative and working together we can improve the overall well-being of our community. We believe that together, we can make a real difference and create a brighter future for ourselves and future generations in the community.
