NSFAS payment for allowances

28 March 2024

Dear NSFAS Student

This is a reminder that the next payment for allowances will be facilitated via NSFAS and Noracco. NSFAS indicated that payments will be released during the following week, with catch-up payments processed during the week of 8 April. Communication for onboarding with Noracco will follow shortly.

Correction of status of students who were wrongly defunded

28 February 2024

Before the finalision of the registration process, the NWU identified a technical glitch related to an academic results file that went corrupt during the uploading process to NSFAS. This only affected students on the Vanderbijlpark Campus. During the first week of February, immediate corrective measures were taken by the NWU to rectify the situation.

Even though the correct information was provided to NSFAS, updating of the system by NSFAS was awaited.  The NWU addressed the matter by allowing the eligible students to fully register on 10 February, irrespective of what NSFAS has on their system. However, there are a few that could not be allowed since they exceed the n+1 rule or did not meet the academic progression requirements or had to sign Acknowledgement of Debt.

The initial number of affected Vanderbijlpark Campus students was 1 329. Out of these, 85 students were 'rejected' because they failed to meet the minimum progressing requirements. Additionally, 27 students still require clarification from NSFAS, as they are all considered risk cases.

As on 13 February, 1 039 students were cleared to register. A further 152 are still conditionally registered, which includes 56 who still need to sign an Acknowledgment of Debt (AOD), and 96 having balances of below R 999.

Apart from the above figure, 34 students have not yet returned or registered at all.

The NWU is continuing to do everything in its power to get NSFAS to finalise their processes.

Planned schedule for NSFAS payments

28 February 2024

Following the instructions received from NSFAS this past weekend to disburse learning material allowances and the first two months of living- and travel allowances, below is the planned schedule for transferring the payment file to the banks by Student Finances. Please be aware that you can anticipate receiving the payment in your own bank account on the same day or within the following two days of the transfer, depending on the bank you are affiliated with. Ensure that your banking details are accurately captured and updated on NWU DIY to avoid any delays in the payout process.

Noracco will initiate direct payments starting from the end of March for April.
