Description

The NWU School of Social Sciences cordially invites to attend a thought-provoking virtual seminar hosted by Mr Derek Buchler, PQM Project Manager from NWU, Potchefstroom Campus. The seminar is titled "Moral Panic: Orthodox Masculinit(ies) and its discontent(s)".

Abstract:

Through a Marxist analytical framework, this presentation as an explorative work aims to dissect and challenge the spectacle created by the disruption caused by a student during the Queer Representative's presentation at North West University's orientation week (Feb 2024). While the disruption appears to stem from a narrow interpretation of Christianity, I endeavour to illustrate the “re”-emergence of Christian Nationalism, reminiscent of current trends observed in the United States. This phenomenon is deeply intertwined with historical perceptions of the university space as inherently 'Christian' and a linguistic bastion of Afrikaner culture. Additionally, this paper offers a brief exploration of the pervasive influence of right-wing ideologies in contemporary global politics, coupled with religious fundamentalism evident in countries such as Afghanistan, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Furthermore, it sheds light on the growing presence of AfriForum Youth on South African campuses, exploiting the pretext of freedom of speech selectively. Ultimately, this study underscores the intricate interplay between identity politics and the hegemonic discourse of heteronormativity, which seeks to suppress the visibility and expression of queer individuals in society.

Derek is a professional consultant within the realm of education, navigating across various disciplines, with a particular focus on human geographies. His expertise has been instrumental as an education consultant, contributing to projects within higher education sector across diverse institutions. Primarily, his consultations address critical issues surrounding curriculum development. Moreover, Derek has made significant contributions within the non-governmental organization (NGO) sector. Most notably, he has been affiliated with the Mzala Nxumalo Centre for the Study of South African Society, a Marxists initiative dedicated to delving into the complexities of the National Question. This endeavour is deeply rooted in the scholarly activities of Mzala Nxumalo, renowned for his seminal work, "Gatsha Buthelezi – Chief with a Double Agenda," crafted during his period of exile. Notably, Buthelezi's stance on the publication led to its removal from circulation and threats of legal recourse.
