You're formally invited to participate in an online discussion hosted by North-West University (NWU) on the topic of youth suicide prevention. The session, titled "The Silver Lining: How to help prevent youth suicide", will be led by counseling psychologist Monique de Klerk from NWU's Centre for Health & Human Performance: Psychology & Wellbeing. Monique specializes in psychosocial development, interpersonal relationships, trauma and bereavement, as well as integrative psychotherapy.
The rising incidence of youth suicide can be attributed to various factors, including the loneliness exacerbated by the impact of social media and external stressors, notably heightened during year-end exam periods and times of uncertain futures. However, understanding the indicators of depression, anxiety, and isolation can serve as a crucial step in preventing suicide.
During the online discussion, Monique will highlight:
- What is suicide, and what is not suicide;
- The signs and symptoms to look out for;
- The care and support you can provide to an individual struggling with these symptoms and;
- What you can do as an individual who is struggling with these symptoms.
The conversation will wrap up with an opportunity for a question-and-answer session.
