The NWU Research Support Department cordially invites you to the POPIA Workshop by Eleni Flack-Davison, Legal Adviser and Research Compliance Manager, Research Data Protection Officer, Head: Office of Research Integrity. Attendance is encouraged from Deputy Deans (R&I), Research Directors, Chairs, Research Support, Technology Transfer & Innovation Support, Global Engagement, and Library & Information Services.

Topic: Enhancing the understanding of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) in the research and innovation support environment.

Abstract:

Dealing with the personal information of students, researchers, or staff requires that we all take necessary steps to ensure that the personal information is recorded, accessed, distributed, stored, retrieved, utilised or destroyed in compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). This is to ensure that we safeguard the privacy and confidentiality of the personal information of our stakeholders and comply with the requirements of POPIA. Please join us for an enlightening workshop on protecting personal information!

Learning outcomes

  1. To delineate the broad applications of the POPI Act.
  2. To understand the lawful conditions of processing personal information.
  3. To appraise the application process for the code regarding the processing of personal information of identifiable research participants for research in South Africa.
