You are cordially invited to attend the POPIA Compliance in the Research Environment Workshop.
Speakers:
- Ms Eleni Flack-Davidson - University of South Africa
Dr Jacinta Toohey - University of Kwa-Zulu Natal
Background:
The protection of personal information has become increasingly important in the research environment due to the growing collection, processing, storage, and sharing of data relating to individuals. Such information may include names, contact details, demographic characteristics, medical records, financial information and other sensitive data. The responsible management of this information is essential to safeguarding participants' privacy, maintaining confidentiality, preventing data breaches, and upholding ethical research standards. POPIA compliance in the research environment requires researchers to incorporate data protection principles throughout the research process. Examining POPIA compliance in the research environment is therefore important for understanding the extent to which researchers comply with legal and ethical obligations, identifying implementation gaps and developing strategies to strengthen the protection of personal information. Ultimately, effective compliance promotes respect for research participants' rights, improves data governance, and supports the integrity and credibility of research outcomes.
