Justice Yvonne Mokgoro Bio
The late Justice Yvonne Mokgoro was one of the first female Justices to be appointed to the Constitutional Court of South Africa, servicing this court from 13 October 1994 until the end of her term on 30 September 2009. Born in Galeshewe Township near Kimberley and determined to pursue her dreams of liberating her people using law as an instrument of justice, the late Justice Mokgoro pursued her legal studies. She obtained a B.luris degree, a Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree, and a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from the University of Bophuthatswana (North-West University, Mahikeng). She also obtained her second LLM degree from the University of Pennsylvania, USA.
Justice Mokgoro started work as a nursing assistant, and later as a retail salesperson. Thereafter, she was appointed, inter alia, as a clerk in the Department of Justice of the erstwhile Bophuthatswana, maintenance officer, and public prosecutor in the MmabathoMagistrate’s Court. Furthermore, Justice Mokgoro worked as a lecturer, and Associate Professor of law in the Department of Jurisprudence, the University of Bophuthatswana, and Associate Professor at the University of the Western Cape. Before her appointment to the Constitutional Court, Justice Mokgoro was an Associate Professor at the University of Pretoria.
