The coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic has undoubtedly affected all of us in one way or another. For instance, gatherings are banned, universities, colleges, schools and most businesses are closed or partially opened. Notwithstanding the current negative impact and challenges of the covid-19 pandemic on all persons and businesses, the faculty of law of the North-West University (NWU) wishes to invite you to present a paper at the first ever virtual Alternative Dispute Resolution Colloquium on 23 November 2021. The theme of the colloquium is: “Alternative Dispute Resolution and Access to Justice?" We are excited to introduce this annual colloquium. Which will focus, among other things, on ADR in general, ethical issues in ADR, Mediation and the Courts, exploring new opportunities in mediation and the influence and effects of the covid-19 pandemic on access to justice. Court Annexed Mediation is a reality, and it now forms part of our legal framework. The covid-19 pandemic has adversely affected access to justice, and the impact of the covid-19 induced lockdowns has further compromised an already over-burdened court system. The 2021 colloquium is an opportunity for all to increase their skills, grow their expertise and explore the options of including restorative justice, civil, commercial, family and medical negligence mediation in their scope of practice. The aim is to host a practical colloquium with experts who will share their expertise on how counsel, attorneys, psychologists and social workers all too often and unwittingly fall into the trap of exacerbating conflict rather than being helpful and constructive in mindfully promoting a resolution. It is time for the legal profession and all relevant persons to adopt innovative ways of finding appropriate resolutions and strategies to circumvent the adverse effects of the covid-19 pandemic and effectively protect the interests of all stakeholders. However, the stated theme does not constitute a closed list for purposes of this colloquium. Any other related contribution is more than welcome. Therefore, the organisers invite law academics, legal practitioners, scholars from other disciplines, public servants, government officials, students, and non-governmental organisations to submit abstracts or papers for presentation at the colloquium.
