Description

You are cordially invited to the International Mother- Laguage Celebration.  Students enrolled in Setswana modules at Mahikeng Campus will take part in various activities, including indoor events such as oral presentations and outdoor activities like indigenous games. The program will feature speeches by selected guests and student presentations. Lecturers from different language departments and faculties are invited to join the celebration. The keynote speaker from the Department of Basic Education (DoBE) will deliver a speech online from the PC, which will be streamed simultaneously for the MC community and students from other campuses.

Purpose

  • To instill in future mother-tongue teachers to love, protect, develop, and take pride in their own language;
  • To encourage Setswana students to participate in language preservation throughout their profession/career;
  • To motivate teachers-in-the-making to take their languages seriously, and continue to write articles or book chapters in their language that will call for solutions regarding the challenges of inappropriate language use (in schools) and reading for meaning in the classroom (as per PIRLS report); etc.

Outcomes

Improvement in:

  • reading and public speech confidence;
  • developing better language teaching skills;
  • appropriate language use in the classroom when teaching (during T-Prac and in their entire career);
  • ability to identify inappropriate language use by fellow-students and learners in the classroom.
  • Creation of a platform with which students can showcase their skills and talents as future writers, Setswana public orators, poets and researchers in indigenous languages.

Every interested individual is welcome to join us. Non-participating students may attend when they find time as the event will be taking place during teaching and learning.
