Title: Towards an understanding of the Circumgalactic Medium and Gas Flows in and around Nearby Galaxies.
In order to better understand how galaxies accrete gas from their surroundings, it is necessary to map neutral hydrogen (HI) emission down to extremely faint column densities; more than three orders of magnitude below what is seen in the star-forming disks of galaxies. Such accretion should be common in galaxies today if they are to sustain ongoing star formation for more than a few billion years. I will discuss the latest results from recent and ongoing surveys of nearby galaxies using MeerKAT and the implications for gas accretion in the local universe as well as the promise for future surveys with the Square Kilometer Array.
