You are cordially invited to present a paper about Animal Welfare, Human Rights, Rights of Nature, and Human-wildlife Coexistence.

Background and theme:

Recently, 'animal welfare’ has enjoyed much attention in South African jurisprudence. Our courts increasingly support the notion of animals as beings to be protected and cared for in line with a strong animal welfare approach. This approach is supported by our judiciary by recognising that ‘animals are sentient beings that are capable of suffering and of experiencing pain’.1 Cameron JA, however, clearly states that the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 169 of 1993 are designed, not to confer rights on animals, but to promote their welfare.
