Admission requirements for the Cambridge and other systems

HIGCSE, IGCSE, AS and O-levels EXAMINATIONS

The Matriculation Board will issue a certificate of full exemption if the following requirements are met:

  • Must pass 5 subjects.

Must pass in      4 x HIGCSE / AS-levels (=HG subjects).

1 x IGCSE / O-levels / NSSC /  (=SG subjects).

  • Must offer English as 1st or 2nd language

  • At least one subject from group 1 or 2.

  • At least two subjects from group 3, 4, 5. (Must therefore offer at least 4 different groups).

  • Must pass at least Mathematics on IGCSE to get recognition for any subject from group 5 as HIGCSE.

GROUP I :

A First Language approved by the Committee of Principals.

GROUP II :

A Second Language approved by the Committee of Principals.

GROUP III :

A Third Language approved by the Committee of Principals (not offered for purposes of Group I or Group II), Biology, Physics and

Chemistry or Mathematics.

GROUP IV :

Economics, Geography, Biology (if not offered under Group III), History, Physics and Chemistry (if not offered under Group III) or

Mathematics (if not offered under Group III).

GROUP V :

Design and Technology, Computer Science, Business Studies or Accountancy

A LEVELS

For matriculation exemption a candidate must at one or more sittings for the examination obtain a pass in a minimum of either five subjects approved by the Committee of Principals for this purpose, at least two of which shall be approved Advanced Level subjects (A-level) and the remainder approved Ordinary Level subjects (O-level), or four approved subjects, three of which shall be approved Advanced Level subjects (A-level) and the remaining subject an approved Ordinary Level (O-level) subject.

Such a candidate must include in the above-mentioned four or five subjects at least one subject selected from each of the following groups:

GROUP l :

English Language

GROUP ll :

Afrikaans, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Dutch, Portuguese or any other language approved by the Committee of Principals.

GROUP lll :

Biology, Botany, Chemistry, French (if not offered under Group ll), General Science, Geology, German (if not offered under Group ll), Greek (if not offered under Group ll), Hebrew (if not offered under Group ll), Italian (if not offered under Group ll), Latin (if not offered under Group ll), Mathematics, Dutch (if not offered under Group ll), Physics, Physics-with-Chemistry, Portuguese (if not offered under Group ll)

and Zoology, or any other language approved by the Committee of Principals (if not offered under Group ll).

 

ADVANCED SUPPLEMENTARY AND ADVANCED SUBSIDIARY LEVEL EXAMINATION AND NAMIBIA SENIOR SECONDARY CERTIFICATE ADVANCED SUBSIDIARY

Matriculation exemption can only be obtained by passing at least five subjects on the Advanced Supplementary Level and the Ordinary Level or the Advanced Subsidiary and Ordinary Level, four of which have to be passed on the Advanced Level (AS Level). The four subjects (AS Level) must include one subject from Groups 1 and 2 respectively, and two subjects must be passed from two different groups from among Groups III, IV or V.

GROUP l :

A first language approved by the Committee of Principals.

GROUP ll :

A second language approved by the Committee of Principals.

GROUP lll :

A third language approved by the Committee of Principals (not offered for the purpose of Group l or ll), Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics.

GROUP lV :

Art, Biology (if not offered under Group ll), Chemistry (if not offered under Group ll), Economics, Geography, History, Mathematics (if not

offered under Group ll), Music or Physics (if not offered under Group ll).

GROUP V :

Accounting, Business Studies, Computing, Design and Technology or Further Mathematics.

NSSCAS: NAMIBIA SENIOR SECONDARY CERTIFICATE ADVANCED SUBSIDIARY

LEVEL

Namibian students may have Afrikaans 1st Language AS or O level or English second language AS or O level. For example, if a learner has Afrikaans first language at O level, they can have English second language at AS level.

One of the 2 languages must be at AS level, the other one can be at O level. The NWU still accept English 2nd language for admission.

OTHER INTERNATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Students applying with any other International Qualification need to submit proof of evaluation from either SAQA (South African Qualification Authority) or USAF (Universities of South Africa) Matriculation Board that they comply with the minimum requirements for degree studies.
