Through the hourglass: leading with purpose and presence.
The theme of the hourglass symbolises the importance of intentional leadership, reflection, and the responsible use of time within student leadership and governance. Just as every grain of sand contributes to the bigger picture, every interaction, decision, and leadership action contributes to shaping the student experience and the future of the NWU community. The focus areas of “connecting with intention,” “communication and conflict,” “reading the room,” “your leadership lens,” and “filling the gaps” emphasises that impactful leadership requires self-awareness, adaptability, emotional intelligence, and the ability to respond meaningfully to the changing needs of students and society.
Therefore, the hourglass serves as a reminder that leadership is not only about holding a position, but about making every moment count through purposeful engagement and responsible action. The SLS aligns with this symbolism by creating a platform where student leaders can engage in strategic discussions and leadership development opportunities. As the sands of the hourglass move forward, the summit represents a transition from leadership potential to leadership impact, empowering leaders to embrace diversity, strengthen social cohesion, and contribute towards the university’s strategic priorities.
The purpose of the Summit is to:
- Share valuable skills and knowledge needed student leaders and the successful completion of the roles and responsibilities.
- Outline the NWU’s objectives and goals for student leadership.
- Launch the latest formal short courses on student leadership development presented by the NWU Student Leadership Academy.
- Pave the way forward for the coordinated and holistic development of student leaders at the NWU.
