At North-West University, community engagement lies at the core of our identity, reflecting the Scholarship of Engagement in action. More than charity, it’s about genuine collaboration with our partners to address shared challenges and promote an ethic of care and social justice across all we do.
By sharing our expertise and learning from our communities, we create meaningful, sustainable impact. Our work aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on environmental, social, and economic sustainability through community-driven research, teaching, and learning.
At this event, we celebrate the excellence of our stakeholders whose partnerships embody these values and drive positive change through collective action.

Engaged Teaching and Learning Awards
This award refers to teaching and learning-related community engagement activities, all of which are mostly for the learning experiences of our students and the ‘not-for-profit’ sharing of expertise, including professional community services and outreach that contributes to development. It can also include engagement involving work-integrated learning and service learning.

Scholarship of Engagements Award
It is about the collaboration between academics and individuals outside the academy for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources to ultimately achieve sustainable change. It requires the application of research and innovation and teaching and learning in society to provide a substantial contribution to development.

Engaged Research and Innovation Award
Engaged research and innovation can be defined as a collaborative process of knowledge creation built on reciprocal partnerships, active participation, and mutual learning. It aims to build capacity, foster empowerment, and create meaningful, sustainable change through continuous dialogue, shared decision-making, and responsiveness to community needs.
