Topic: Community-Based Research: Indigenous and Decolonising Research Ethics - A Comparative Perspective.
Abstract:
Community-based research requires ethical approaches that recognise communities not merely as research participants, but as active partners and knowledge holders. This workshop explores Indigenous and decolonising research ethics, examining their similarities, differences, and relevance to community-engaged research. It considers principles such as respect, reciprocity, community participation, knowledge ownership, and equitable benefit-sharing, while highlighting the challenges of applying these principles within conventional research and institutional ethics frameworks. Through a comparative perspective, the workshop seeks to strengthen researchers’ understanding of culturally responsive and socially responsible research practices and encourage more respectful, equitable, and meaningful relationships between researchers and communities.
