Abstract:

The rapid adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming research, from accessing archives and scholarly literature to analysing data, writing and disseminating knowledge. While AI offers significant opportunities to enhance research efficiency and innovation, it also raises important concerns about research integrity, intellectual property, authorship, bias, data governance and transparency. This workshop will bring together 3 interconnected dimensions of AI and scholarship: global and African approaches to AI governance and research integrity, practical guidance on responsible AI use for NWU researchers and the capabilities and limitations of AI detection technologies. It highlights the importance for critical AI literacy, acknowledgement of appropriate AI use and retain human responsibility for scholarly judgement.
