The Faculty of Humanities at North-West University (NWU) cordially invites twenty higher education practitioners based outside South Africa to attend its 1st International Teaching Week, taking place from 31 August to 5 September 2025 in South Africa.

We strongly encourage teaching staff interested in visiting NWU and gaining insight into how the university operates to do so during this Teaching Week. The theme will focus on The Role of the Humanities in Social Justice.

This event presents an excellent opportunity to share knowledge, learn from one another, promote internationalisation, and strengthen our partnerships through in-person engagement.

During the week, participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Share good practices;
  • Interact with South African staff and students through planned academic activities;
  • Promote their own institutions via an exhibition*; and
  • Experience South African culture by taking part in scheduled cultural activities.

Philosophy

Philosophy is the study of fundamental problems about knowledge, truth, values, existence, reality, thinking, reason and the meaning of life. Literally the term philosophy means love (philia) of wisdom (Sophia) in a very broad sense. Those who seek a better understanding of life itself, the world we live in, of our relations with other people and about how we should live our lives, should study a BA in Humanities and/or a Bachelor in Philosophy (BPhil). These programmes at NWU are designed to pursuit these fundamental questions in a systematic and academic way, they stimulate and enhance analytical and critical thinking, challenge one’s own way of thinking about the world and oneself, and they develop creative thinking and open-mindedness.

Philosophy asks questions no other subjects ask and has a unique focus on human beings and their existence. It contributes to critical and creative thinking which enhances the understanding and functioning of other programmes and subjects within the faculty, like Communication Studies, Government Studies, and others.

The School of Philosophy is responsible for the graduate and postgraduate programmes in philosophy, and for the development and presentation of all ‘Understanding the World’ modules within the faculty. These modules are offered on all campuses and are compulsory for all 2nd and 3rd year students.

Social Sciences

The Bachelor of Social Sciences (BSocSc) programmes combine disciplines and courses to provide the student with a particular knowledge and skills base.

  • Development Studies
  • History
  • Heritage and Cultural Tourism Management
  • Population Studies and Demography
  • Social Anthropology
  • Sociology

Participants will also visit NWU’s campuses, located in three different towns, offering a chance to experience the university’s diverse communities. Cultural experiences will include a visit to a cultural village, a safari/game drive, a boat cruise on the Vaal River, and the sampling of local cuisines.

The registration fee is €150. This includes:

** The same lecture will be presented three times to different student groups across the NWU’s three campuses: Vanderbijlpark, Potchefstroom, and Mahikeng.
*** All in-country transport during the programme will be arranged by NWU via a chartered coach. Renting a private vehicle is optional and at the participant’s own expense.
