You are cordially invited to attend a talk on "Me, Myself And (AI)I At Work: How The Voluntary Use Of AI To Augment Task Processes Can Affect The Feeling Of Agency, Feeling Of Control And Task-related Identities", by Constanze Leeb.
About the presentation:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is present in many aspects of our lives. Companies and organisations often adopt AI to increase speed and productivity, or to reduce costs. However, many still struggle to achieve the desired outcomes as the introduction of AI impacts not only business processes, but more importantly, workers and their tasks. This might be due to AI’s unique nature as a technology: it can be perceived as another agent that processes data independently, learns, makes inferences, acts, and changes its behaviour based on cues from the environment. Furthermore, AI often shows an inherent lack of transparency on how it functions, making it difficult to monitor, fully anticipate, understand, and control its behaviour and outputs. The “black-box” and perceived agentic nature of AI can challenge our feeling of agency and feeling of control, which we try to protect as they are inherent to how we perceive ourselves (i.e., our identities). This can create tensions for humans, particularly when working closely with AI and sharing tasks with it, as in AI-Augmentation in the work place. In this talk I will present some of the findings of my qualitative case studies (e.g., knowledge work, creative work, Air Traffic Control) on how humans navigate the challenges to their feelings of agency, feelings of control and occupational identities in practice when sharing tasks with AI, as well as share my thoughts on future research directions that could be valuable in this area.
