Pukki talent festival showcases top talent

The 36th Pukki Talent Festival was an event unlike its predecessors. For the first time, this year’s festival was held in a more intimate setting that allowed the audience to experience the magnificent performances, backed by a five-piece band, up close and personal.

Eagi and Pukki, the NWU mascots, with Leroux Malan of NWU Potchefstroom Arts, singer Nadine, programme director, Carmen Basson, overall winner, and Jaco van der Walt, manager of NWU Potchefstroom Arts.

The gala events of the annual festival, which is presented by NWU Arts and the Student Council’s Art Council on the campus in Potchefstroom, took place on 9 and 10 May.

It was held at the School for Music’s conservatory, which is a much smaller venue than the auditorium where the event was previously hosted. The evening was a celebration of the performing and visual arts, which was showcased through an exhibition in the foyer.

Forty-five artists gave their best in more than 20 items, ensuring there was something for everyone to enjoy.Singer Nadine acted as programme director and the talent judges included lecturer Desmond Phuthi, television presenter and communication expert Sinki Mlambo and the Aardklop Arts Festival’s Alexa Strachan.

Jaco van der Walt, manager for NWU Potchefstroom Arts, says the Pukki Talent Festival is one of the many platforms they have created for students to showcase their talents.

“This year’s festival was again a wonderful experience. The talent was astonishing. I firmly believe this year’s participants will follow in the footsteps of previous Pukki Talent Festival participants, such as Katlego Maboe, and grace our country’s stages and become well-known personalities in the future.”
