Alumna Yvonne Kgwarae says through her professional life she is able to put her academic qualifications to good use and at the same time utilise the skills she gained in the field of communication.

Enjoying an active student life

“During my tenure at the university I participated in various extra-curricular activities, ranging from playing volleyball to even a short stint in student politics as member of the Human and Social Sciences Student Council.

“This was still not enough for me, so one day a group or friends and I decided to form a Current Affairs Society which would later give birth to the student publication The Album (a publication which still exists today).

“My role at The Album was to raise funds and develop content for the publication. Through this I got a job with the then Public Relations Office as a student assistant, developing and collating content for various university publications.”

Holding the fort in Botswana

Dear all,

My name is Yvonne Kgwarae and I am a proud graduate of the NWU’s campus in Mahikeng – a BA Social Sciences Psychology major.

I entered the university a young, overzealous girl and came out a well-rounded young woman ready for the professional world.

Venturing out into the world

Armed with my degree and experience from the university (see textbox on the left), I went back home to Botswana where I landed a job with Populations Services International.

Starting my career in social and behavior change communication, I went on to work for various NGOs in my country before I joined the Johns Hopkins University Centre for Communication Programmes.

I am currently employed at the centre, overseeing country operations and developing and leading various health communication campaigns.

Keeping in touch

I continue to interact with the university by coordinating Botswana-based alumni.

I make sure we are all are connected and kept abreast of various occurrences and changes at the university. This includes coordinating different charity initiatives and at the same time upholding the brand name of the university.

I consider myself privileged to have received a solid foundation from the North-West University, as it has moulded me to be the formidable woman I am today.

Regards,

Yvonne Kgwarae
