NWU shines in international rankings

I am extremely proud to share with you some information about our ranking results. We fared very well in three sets of rankings that were released recently.

In the Shangai Ranking Consultancy’s 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), which are based on a transparent methodology and objective third-party data, the NWU is recognised as one of the world’s top 1 000 research universities.

Equally impressive is the result of the THE World University Rankings, where we ranked among the top six universities in South Africa, while being placed in the 501 to 600 bracket out of more than 1 600 global universities across 99 countries and regions.

I am also very excited about the positive results from the newly released StuDocu World University Ranking 2021. The NWU boasts an impressive score of 9 out of 10 for remote learning during the pandemic and ranked fourth overall in the country for student experience. Click here to read more about these results. I am sure that you are equally proud of your alma mater.

Message from

the vice-chancellor

Dear alumni

Spring has arrived and, as you read this message, the NWU's vaccination drives on all three campuses are coming to a close for now. Not only have we vaccinated many staff and students but, in line with our ethic of care, we have also welcomed members of the public to our vaccination sites.

Our ethic of care also extends to you, our alumni, and this edition of the alumni magazine underscores the value we place on you. As we wanted to hear your voice and find our what kind of information about your alma mater you want to receive, we conducted a survey, and in this edition we share the results with you.

In the survey results, many participants indicated that they want to know more about the Convocation and how to become members. I would like to invite you to contact our Alumni Office in this regard. You can send your inquiries to nwualumni@nwu.ac.za or nicolize.vanderwalt@nwu.ac.za. As a member of the Convocation, you can make your voice heard through the four elected members representing the Convocation on the NWU Council.

Celebrating our women

During August, the NWU once again celebrated Women’s Month. As part of our campaign, staff members recorded short videos on issues close to women’s hearts.

Unfortunately, celebrations such as these are marred by the fact that many women still face inequality and the scourge of gender-based violence. The NWU continues to drive awareness campaigns against gender-based violence, but lots more must be done to rid society of the abuse of women and children.

Return to campus

As we approach the fourth quarter of our academic year, we are giving due consideration to the reintegration of staff and students into the co-called “new normal”.

As I have stated previously, we remain a contact university at heart, committed to a vibrant student life. To this end we must, as far as reasonably possible, foster a semblance of normalcy for our student body as they experience studying at the NWU, thus maintaining our student value proposition.

My best wishes to all of you as we continue to face the challenges of the global pandemic.

Please keep safe.
