For some, online is best
A total of 84% of the respondents indicated that they have not attended previous virtual events for alumni. Of the rest who have attended these events, 88,51% said they would still do it even after the Covid-19 lockdown regulations have been lifted.
The majority, 72,41%, also specified that virtual events are the way of the future and that they support this approach. Ideally, online events should last between one and two hours, and Zoom is their favourite platform.
Convocation: alumni want to know more
Looking at the results, Convocation matters seem to be something of an enigma. When asked to rank information topics in order of preference (1 to 6), Convocation matters came out sixth.
Asked if they are members of the Convocation, a whopping 88,89% said they were not.
Even more indicated that they did know much about the Convocation and how to become a member. Fortunately, 79,71% of them would like to receive more information on the NWU Convocation, and 64,85% would like to be contacted in this regard.

Which NWU issues attract your interest? Do you smile or frown when receiving an email from the NWU? These and many more questions we had about your feelings towards your alma mater led to an alumni survey we conducted earlier this year.
The purpose of the survey was to get to know you better because we care about you, our alumni, and would like to make sure our communication with you is relevant.
Now let’s take a look at what you told us:
Research and academic news (84,49%) was the main priority, followed by general NWU news (60,96%).
(The percentages in brackets refer to the respondents who selected these options as their first choice.)
Participation in surveys (41%) and the NWU & U magazine (34,58%)
Frequency of communication
The respondents would like to receive news from the NWU once a month.
Email is the most popular (49,20%), with the NWU website hot on its heels (37,61%). However, when it comes to the preferred method of communication, SMS overtook the website, while email was still on top.
Transformation (43,85%) is the most relevant, followed by quality assurance (41,89%) and strategy implementation (37,25%).
Career services to alumni came out on top as the most relevant (51,34%) and alumni mentoring opportunities second (48,66%).
Seminars were the most popular (86,33%), with industry-related events a close second (82,37%).
Thanks to everyone who participated and if you did not, please join in next time. After all, to communicate with you as effectively as possible, we need to address your real concerns and information needs.

About the survey
A total of 855 alumni completed the survey, the majority of whom were former NWU contact students with undergraduate degrees. Most of the respondents were between 20 and 30 years old.
One of the most heartening findings was that 97,66% would recommend the NWU to a friend, family member or colleague as an academic institution of choice.
