This is a great love

“We love the NWU and many of the adventures we experienced were on the Potchefstroom Campus,” Reynold Fourie says.

The Fourie brothers – Bennie, Reynold and Wilbrie – studied on the Potchefstroom Campus between 2002 and 2009.

Bennie completed a BCom degree in law and also has postgraduate qualifications in business management and education, while Reynold holds a master’s degree in theology and Wilbrie a master’s degree in management accounting.

All three of them were primaria of Hombre men's residence in their day, while Reynold and Wilbrie also served on the Student Council. However, that is not where the family’s connection with the NWU ends.

Their sister, Mareli Mosca, and their parents, Ben and Susan Fourie, are also NWU alumni. Even the two sisters-in-law – Reynold’s wife, Vicki, and Wilbrie’s wife, Annelize – are alumni. The three brothers and their loved ones live in Cape Town, not far from each other.

Die Broer Toer: the Fourie brothers take to the road

What happens when an actor, a minister and a business developer hop on their motorcycles and go on tour? And what if these three are also brothers and NWU alumni?

NWU alumni Bennie, Reynold and Wilbrie Fourie can soon be seen in the TV series Die Broer Toer on kykNET.

We will find out soon when Die Broer Toer (Brothers on Tour) starts on kykNET, DStv channel 144, on Tuesday, 5 October at 21:00.

When the TV programme starts, the three alumni brothers will take us along on their journey as they explore out-of-the-way places such as Riemvasmaak, Vioolsdrif and the Cold Bokkeveld on their motorcycles.

“It was a special experience to bring all my loves together in one place – family, film and adventure,” says Bennie, known for his roles in the TV series Hotel and the film Vuil wasgoed.

“We are going far, and we are going for gold while we laugh and do what brothers do best,” says Reynold, the minister in the group.

From the Cold Bokkeveld to the Kalahari

In the first episode of the series, Bennie has a surprise for his brothers and they start their long journey to the Cold Bokkeveld. There they face their first challenge: the Bike Jimkana. In the second episode, they travel through the Cederberg Mountains to the Biedouw Valley, and in the third episode they explore the West Coast.

Other places they visit include Groenriviermond, Hondeklip Bay, Holgatrivierloop, the Orange River at Vioolsdrift, Riemvasmaak and the salt pans and dunes of the Kalahari.

A bumpy ride

Each episode has its own challenges that the brothers set for one another, such as “by my sy” (by my side), “radio geen beheer” (radio no control), “hommel-tjommel” (drone drama), “arsenaal-generaal” (arsenal general) and many more.

The loser of the challenges has to be penalised, which naturally puts the brothers under severe peer pressure. In addition, there are various mechanical and medical problems that inevitably crop up on a tour of this kind.

The brothers will also address a few current issues. “I want people who have watched the programme to laugh until they cry, shed a tear and decide impulsively to jump into a bakkie and go on an adventure with people they love,” says Wilbrie.

So fasten your safety belt and brace yourself: this is a journey like no other!

They have been touring for donkey’s years

Taking to the road is nothing new to the Fourie brothers.

They started touring together while they were still at school, and at university they bought a bakkie and travelled through South Africa and some of the neighbouring countries.

TV viewers had a taste of Die Broer Toer in 2020, when they toured the Tankwa Karoo on motorcycles.

The aim of the pilot episode was to establish whether viewers would be interested in a full series. The reaction was so overwhelmingly positive that the brothers started planning their 23-day motorcycle adventure.
