Staged in the Sanlam Auditorium on the campus in Potchefstroom on 30 and 31 August and on 1 and 2 September, the much-loved musical Fame was a thrilling, unforgettable feast for the senses.

The creative team responsible for Fame, namely members of Artéma, Alabama Productions and NWU Potch Arts, took the audience on a glorious journey filled with great performances by talented performers who included students and lecturers.

Alumna Nacia Kruger directed and choreographed this exciting production, while Pieter de Bruin, the artistic director of the Artéma recording studio, was in charge of the music. A nine-piece orchestra provided the accompaniment.

Triennial meeting postponed

According to the NWU Statute, a general meeting of the Convocation must be held at least once every three years. Various invitations to this meeting, scheduled for 26 August 2017, were sent out. Unfortunately, there were not enough responses for a quorum and the meeting was cancelled. It will be rescheduled early in 2018.

Until a new executive committee structure for the Convocation has been elected, the current one will remain in office.

How can I be of value to my alma mater?

There are numerous ways in which you can give back what you have received from the NWU. For instance, we need you as alumni to keep us abreast of the relevance of our qualifications to the needs of industry.

But we also need our alumni to be role models for current students. Please visit our campuses and talk to our students. Encourage and motivate them, warn them of the challenges and tell them of the opportunities awaiting them in the ‘real’ world.

You can also create in-service-learning opportunities for our students by employing them as interns – introduce them to your career world and help hone their skills.

Any donations you wish to make will be received with appreciation and put to good use. You can fund a project that you really care about, or a specific group of students, thereby contributing to the future development of the NWU. Click here for more information about donations.

After all, the well-known sayings, ‘paying it forward’ and ‘ploughing it back’, do not only benefit the person on the receiving end, but also the giver. No-one can deny that giving is an enriching experience that makes you feel good about yourself and adds purpose to your life.

This is a win-win situation

Being an active and involved alumnus of the NWU undeniably puts one in a win-win situation.

These are the members of the executive committee of the Convocation. In front from left are Dr Dirk Hermann (vice-president), Dr Sammy Thekiso (president), Prof Marius Stander (treasurer) and Adv Marelize Kruger. In the back are Henk Schalekamp, Albert Sorgdrager, Werner Human and Nelson Mongale.

Dr Sammy Thekiso is the president of the NWU Convocation. This is the opinion of Dr Sammy Thekiso, president of the NWU Convocation, who firmly believes that staying in touch with your alma mater benefits both you and the university.

The NWU&U spoke to Sammy about establishing mutually beneficial relationships between alumni and the university.

First of all, how can I as an alumnus benefit by keeping in touch with the NWU?

One of the first benefits that comes to my mind is networking. We all know how important it is these days to be able to rely on an extended professional network to further your career. Being an alumnus allows you to be part of a worldwide network of NWU alumni who share your educational background, and most probably also your basic value systems and work ethics – all valuable strengths gained through an education at the NWU.

All fellow alumni can be assets to you. You can ask the older ones for career advice and use their networks for promotion possibilities, while the younger alumni you have contact with can be a source of future employees or colleagues.

Staying in contact with the university itself allows you to use the facilities and expertise of the institution in your professional life – for instance, applying research results to make your business grow. It also enables us to keep you informed of the important developments and achievements at the NWU.

How can I become involved?

There are two main channels available – the Alumni Association and the Convocation.

Let’s talk about the Convocation first. This is a formal structure that promotes the welfare of the university and actively influences its affairs through representation on the NWU Council. It consists of former students (alumni) who have obtained a degree or diploma from the NWU or its predecessors, as well as all current members of the university’s permanent staff.

You can only become a member by formally applying for membership and paying the prescribed R50 lifelong membership fee. Click here for more information about membership and the application form.

And the Alumni Association?

The NWU Alumni Association is a wing of the Convocation and promotes lifelong links between alumni and the university.

Every person who has a diploma or degree from the NWU (or its predecessors) can become a member of the Alumni Association. The spouses of alumni, as well as individual donors who did not study at the NWU, can become associate members, who have the same rights and privileges as other members.
