Staged in the Sanlam Auditorium on the campus in Potchefstroom on 30 and 31 August and on 1 and 2 September, the much-loved musical Fame was a thrilling, unforgettable feast for the senses.

The creative team responsible for Fame, namely members of Artéma, Alabama Productions and NWU Potch Arts, took the audience on a glorious journey filled with great performances by talented performers who included students and lecturers.

Alumna Nacia Kruger directed and choreographed this exciting production, while Pieter de Bruin, the artistic director of the Artéma recording studio, was in charge of the music. A nine-piece orchestra provided the accompaniment.

A distinguished woman in science

Prof Alta Schutte is a professor of physiology and holder of the South African Research Chair in the Early Detection and Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in South Africa.

Funded by the Department of Science and Technology, this chair is located within the Hypertension in Africa Research Team (HART) in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Alta is also the director of the Medical Research Council’s Extramural Unit for Hypertension and Cardiovascular Disease and vice-president of the International Society of Hypertension.

Researchers keep NWU on the map

Two researchers, Prof Alta Schutte and Prof Melville Saayman, are keeping the NWU on the research map: they were recently acknowledged at events held to honour the greatest scientists in South Africa.

First, in June 2017, Alta and Melville received NSTF-South32 Awards, also known as “Science Oscars”, at a gala dinner in Johannesburg. A few weeks later, in August, Alta won the Department of Science and Technology's Women in Science Award.

The NSTF-South32 Awards are the largest science, engineering, technology (SET) and innovation awards in South Africa, and were the first science awards in the country to focus on spreading information about SET to the public.

Alta is the joint winner of the TW Kambule-NSTF Award for research and its outputs by an individual within 15 years of receiving a PhD, while Melville is the winner of the Special Annual Theme Award, presented to an individual who contributes to or supports sustainable tourism for development. Naledi Pandor, Minister of Science and Technology and the event’s patron, presented the awards.

Among the very best

Alta’s latest achievement, the annual Woman in Science Award aims to celebrate work in natural and engineering sciences and is presented by the Department of Science and Technology.

Winning this award places Alta in the same league as some of the country’s most revered and inspirational women scientists.

In the past, Alta has also been honoured with a Woman in Science Award for Distinguished Young Women in Science (younger than 40) and an excellence award from the Physiology Society of Southern Africa.

She was also chosen for the Next Einstein Forum which connects science, society and policy in Africa and the rest of the world.

Winning coveted awards such as these once again shows that the NWU’s researchers are among the best in South Africa and that their research has great impact.
