There is something magical about December and for each of us, it conjures up different delights.
For some of us, December reminds us of coming home to the aroma of mom’s cooking. For others it is synonymous with feeling the hot sea sand under our bare feet, or hearing the laughter of our children or grandchildren.
December often sees people coming together and having a good time around tables laden with delicious dishes. Not all people are so fortunate, however.
According to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization website, more than 820 million people go hungry every day. This is why alumnus Sydwell Sihlangu’s mushroom project – aimed at strengthening food security – is so commendable.
The festive season is also a time of giving – both to those close to us and to others in need.
This is where the concepts of “ploughing back” or “paying it forward” are relevant – something that our alumni demonstrated at the homecoming event on the campus in Vanderbijlpark. During this event, they raised money for the campus’s Feather Fund, which assists needy students.
Another NWU fund for students who are struggling to make ends meet, is the newly established Law Student Wellbeing Fund. Have a look at the article to find out what it entails and how you can contribute towards this worthy cause.
Whether you are hitting the road or staying at home; visiting friends and family or going on a silent retreat, enjoy the merry month of December and stay safe.
Until next year!
