Data base is growing

About a year ago, we started distinguishing between contact and distance modes of delivery on our alumni data base. We currently have 18 903 open and distance learning alumni.

This figure does not include the students who graduated during March this year. It also excludes recipients of certificates, as alumni are specifically students who received degrees or diplomas.

Out of sight but not out of mind

We value all our alumni, whether they received their qualifications via contact or distance studies. Distance students might be “out of sight”, so to speak, but they certainly are not out of mind.

Staff of our alumni office demonstrated this when they attended the Unit for Open and Distance Learning’s graduation ceremony and alumni event on 22 March 2018 at the Northern Cape Technical Vocational Education and Training College in Upington.

Prof Robert Balfour, deputy vice-chancellor for teaching and learning, addressed the 100 guests after the graduation ceremony. He spoke to them about the importance of having a high-quality NWU degree and being an NWU alumnus, and gave them an overview of the recent developments at the NWU.

Welcoming new alumni

Brand-new alumna Elri du Plessis poses with her proud parents, Johann and Jeanetta du Plessis at a “photo booth” provided by Stakeholder Relations. Elri received a BCom CA degree during the graduation ceremony on 1 March on the campus in Potchefstroom.

Her parents are both alumni and staff members of the NWU.

Johann is a senior research support officer at Research Support and Prof Jeanetta was recently appointed deputy dean for research and innovation in the Faculty of Health Sciences after heading the Centre of Excellence for Pharmaceutical Sciences (Pharmacen) since 2004.
