Many firsts, and a lot to boast about

There were so many firsts this year – from the virtual fun run and cycle-race events, to a virtual golf tournament, and a successful online concert.

We are proud of our alumni and we tried to create as many events as possible to boast about you.

We also helped to build your careers through virtual events where you could learn from experts in the comfort of your own homes.

My heart rejoices when I think of your support, and that you are just as proud as we are of the NWU’s successes and do not hesitate to roll up your sleeves to help others who are not as privileged.

Alumni office: looking back on 2020

I once read the following quote: “During difficult times character is not built, it is revealed”.

We can agree, it was an extraordinary year and we were confronted with so many challenges. The world has changed unrecognizably since January. It was heartwarming to see how the NWU community, which includes our alumni, rose to every challenge. How we decided to reveal a character of strength, of hope, of unity and care.

Some might feel they have missed out on a lot during the lockdown. But for many it was a time of reflectionand re-prioritising their choices.

For others, like essential staff, it was a time of anxiety, or perhaps fear, and working long hours – we salute you and thank you.

Looking back with gratitude

I believe we can look back on 2020 with gratitude and thanks. Looking at how we adapted to the ever-changing circumstances and to being one of only a few universities who will complete the academic year, we can applaud ourselves.

And our alumni are the backbone of so many successes. We thank you for every contribution, for supporting our virtual events and for always remembering your roots here with us. Those deep roots make it possible for the NWU to grow and prosper.

A year of contemplation

For me, 2020 was, in spite of everything, a year of grace – a year of contemplation and listening, of giving more than receiving. For me and our team it is a privilege to serve our NWU alumni, to get to know you, and to be allowed to be by your side along the way.

May this be a wonderful, blessed and prosperous festive season for each and every one of you. May 2021 be another year of grace, for you and for me and for everyone who helps to make this world – virus and all – a better place.

Until next year,
