NWU launches a one-stop postgraduate eFundi framework

In addition to the web page for postgraduate students, the NWU has launched a one-stop framework on our e-learning platform, eFundi, where postgraduate students and supervisors can find all the information they need.

This framework provides dedicated space where lecturers can share information and save documents for their students.

The quick link section of the site is like an à la carte menu where the user can select various topics to read, or attend in-depth online training sessions.

A technical section prepares students for the research-related technical requirements of postgraduate study. They can assess their computer literacy skills and have software training on skills for research projects, such as word processing and project management.

Other sections include proposal development and research design (linking to a short learning programme from the Optentia Research Unit). Students can also request support for their research projects.

In the text boxes we highlight only two of many ways in which we support our postgraduate students.

Postgraduate students may face an uphill climb, but they are not alone

For many of us, considering postgraduate studies is like looking at a mountain top. You know a panoramic view awaits you there, but the steepness of the climb dampens the thrill of imagining yourself standing on the summit.

Don’t fear, say Pieter Moller and GP van Rheede van Oudtshoorn; you will not be left alone on your postgraduate journey.

In the video below, postgraduate recruiters Pieter and GP mention some of the services available to postgraduate students, and invite you to visit the web page for postgraduate students. On this page, you will find a wealth of information, ranging from how to register to how supervision works.

The question is not IF you should do a postgraduate qualification, but only WHEN you would like to start, says GP.

He has a point – in today’s competitive job market, you definitely need something that will make you stand out among other graduates. While navigating your career path, you need an X factor tucked away in your backpack that will give you an edge, improve your prospects and help you climb the career ladder with more agility than your peers.

This X factor is of course postgraduate studies – your highway towards reaching the summit of a bright career.

In this video Pieter Moller and GP van Rheede van Oudtshoorn tell you why you should start your postgraduate studies.

Guidance from the experts on how to develop a research proposal

Writing a research paper can be a daunting task that takes time and effort, often causing a great deal of anxiety and stress for students.

In a postgraduate seminar series, Dr Tsietsi Mmutle and Dr Tshepang Molale from the School of Communication give some expert advice for postgraduate students.

Topics that they cover include how to develop your research proposal and how to cultivate your own voice.

They also advise students to form a research community with their fellow students to motivate and help each other.

“Research can be a very lonely journey and therefore you need a community to find support so that you can pull through together,” says Tsietsi.

The postgraduate seminar series, held via Zoom, is available on YouTube.
