Trees and women give life

Imagine this: the cover page of the Alumni Office’s events menu for August/September features a picture of a woman standing under a tree.

Both the woman and the tree are symbols of life.

*Trees host complex microhabitats – one mature oak can for instance be home to as many as 500 different species. Similarly, women give life and provide shelter by being “home” to their offspring.

Keeping this in mind, the Alumni Office will focus on Women’s Month (August) and on Arbor Week (starting on 1 September).

On 27 August they will host a Women in Business webinar to empower our alumnae involved in business, and during Arbor Week they are going to plant trees.

Would you like to join in the tree-planting fun? Well, go get your spade and contact us at nwualumni@nwu.ac.za. If you can’t join us physically, why not plant your own trees and send us videos of the happy events?

Take a seat at the alumni events table

Looking at the chock-full menu of events that the Alumni Office has planned for you, our alumni, it is clear that they are not allowing the Covic-19 pandemic to dampen their spirits. Hopefully you will have a hearty appetite for the fare that will be on offer during the following few months.

Let’s have a look at this spread.

Boost your career path

Are you serious about your career, development and lifelong learning journey? Well, look no further: we are your career partners all the way.

You will find all the experts, advice and information you need on our Facebook page. From there you can follow the links to the videos from Bhive, the NWU Career Centre, and the NWU Business School – all of them free tools to enhance your career paths.

Salute our nurses

May is Nursing Month and to these heroes we say: thank you and we salute you!

Nurses are a huge component of our alumni and are currently making an enormous contribution in the health sector. That is why we have asked you to tell us about nursing alumni who have unselfishly joined the fight against Covid-19.

Have a cuppa

On 29 May we will share a cup of coffee with our alumni from the beautiful Jacaranda City. If you would like to join us in Pretoria, send an email to nicolize.vanderwalt@nwu.ac.za.

During June – which is of course Youth Month – we will focus on our young alumni and their achievements. If you know of any alumni younger than 30 who deserve to be celebrated, contact us at nwualumni@nwu.ac.za.

Lend a helping hand

In July, the Alumni Office staff will roll up their sleeves and do some community work, proving that they really live the NWU’s dream of acting with an ethic of care. In the spirit of Madiba Day on 18 July, they will do their small part in the communities surrounding our three campuses.

Do you want to support them? Contact nwualumni@nwu.ac.za to participate in the projects or make any kind of donation.
