Research uncovers the causes
of allergic reactions

Nasal congestion, sneezing, coughing, rashes and swelling, and even asthma and allergic rhinitis ... Allergies can seriously affect people's quality of life. Researchers from the NWU are on a mission to not only understand which plants and trees are through their pollen impacting the health of local communities, but also to empower people to effectively manage their allergies.

The impact of HIV-ARVs
on SA's water systems

NWU researchers have completed a groundbreaking study that sheds light on the environmental implications of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) in South Africa's water resources. The report, "Quantification, fate, and hazard assessment of HIV-ARVs in water resources", was submitted to the Water Research Commission (WRC) and is the most comprehensive study to date on the issue.

Indigenous agriculture promotes food security

Although indigenous agricultural practices play a major role in enhancing food security in local communities, they are still undervalued, overlooked and regarded as old fashioned. Thato Hazel Seemise is conducting research that could help to give indigenous agricultural practices a place in the sun.

A medal of honour for lifelong devotion

A mindset change in favour of self-directed learning could solve many of the problems in education and possibly in the workplace too, according to award-winning expert Prof Elsa Mentz. The Education Association of South Africa awarded her the EASA Medal of Honour during its annual conference.
