Social justice is not only the government’s responsibility – we all need to be activists for social justice in our own social space.

These were the words of legal giant Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng when he officially opened the new Faculty of Law building on the campus in Mahikeng on 20 November 2018.

Chief Justice Mogoeng is one of many well-known legal experts who are alumni of the NWU. In fact, the recent opening of the law building confirms the university’s long track record of producing future leaders and game changers in this field.

Producing a steady stream of experts

The campus in Mahikeng has delivered many judges who are helping to shape and uphold justice in South Africa."These alumni have made their mark, not only in South Africa, but also internationally," says Dr Neo Morei, deputy dean for quality assurance and stakeholder relations in the faculty.

Over the years, the faculty has conferred honorary doctorates of law on individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the country and the legal environment.

These stalwarts include the late Justice Victor Gustav Hiemstra, Judge Yvonne Mokgoro, the late former Chief Justice Pius Nkonzo Langa, and the current Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng.
