Thousands of South Africans recently celebrated the cultural wealth of our nation during Heritage Day on 24 September. Many honoured the day by showing up in colourful clothing and accessories representing their cultural backgrounds, while others enjoyed the day with family.

From prayer to babysitting and cooking in honour of

HERITAGE DAY

eish! spoke to some staff members to find out what they were up to on the day.

NWU Protection Services director, Des Ayob, started his Heritage Day celebrations by attending a communal Friday midday prayer known as “Jumuah”. After prayer he went home and celebrated the day with his family. "The weather was brilliant and we had a fantastic time," he says.

 

Prof Linda du Plessis, deputy vice-chancellor for planning and Vanderbijlpark Campus operations, spent the day babysitting her granddaughter, who was visiting for the weekend. The two enjoyed feeding horses and gardening together.

 

Musa Zanempi, NWU brand specialist, says "We spent the day with each other as a family and recognised the day cooking South African-style. My wife dressed up in recognition of the day."

 

The School of Industrial Psychology and Human Resource Management at the Vanderbijlpark Campus hosted a braai and discussed views on heritage.
