There is hope amid the sitting and the standing

If you are a chronic desk sitter or stand in a lecture hall the whole day, the smaller sports codes offered on the campus in Potchefstroom may be the key to a healthier and more active you.

In addition to the major sport types like rugby and cricket that are in the spotlight regularly, the campus also hosts smaller sports codes. We spoke to Johann Sauer, the NWU PUK Sport manager for indoor sports codes, about these codes and asked whether staff members of the NWU may also participate in them.

“The official smaller sports codes are basketball, golf, gymnastics, karate, squash, rock climbing, chess and table tennis,” said Johann. “You as a staff member can participate in these smaller sports codes, but your participation may be limited from time to time when the university teams have to practise for big tournaments.”

Join them

For an annual registration fee of only R125, you can also use the gym and the squash courts in the sports centre below the amphitheatre. After that it costs only R8 for a session in the gym and R14 to play squash for 45 minutes. You have to load the money onto your personnel card beforehand and do your booking on a touch screen at the sports centre.

Johann said that many staff members also participate in activities such as Pilates, yoga and kick boxing, which private instructors present in the sports centre.

“More information about this and also about the clubs is available on the notice boards in the sports centre, but people who are interested can also contact me at johann.sauer@nwu.ac.za or at puksport@nwu.ac.za,” said Johann.

Small but successful

As far as success stories are concerned, the smaller sports codes on the campus in Potchefstroom do not have to stand in the shadow of the major types of sport.

Teams from the smaller sports codes regularly take part in various leagues and also in the championships of University Sports South Africa (USSA).

“Our karate teams have won the USSA championships for the 17th consecutive year,” said Johann Sauer of NWU PUK Sport. “In addition, our gymnastics team is the current USSA winner and our badminton players have won three out of five times over the past five years and achieved second place twice.”

There are also residence leagues for basketball, badminton, squash and table tennis.
