First she became a wheelchair basketball star; then Africa’s first-ever runway model in a wheelchair; now she has been crowned first princess in the first-ever Miss Wheelchair World pageant.

 

Lebohang Monyatsi, an NWU alumna, is achieving extraordinary things and making South Africa and the NWU proud.

 

She was crowned first princess at the Miss Wheelchair World pageant held on 7 October 2017 in Warsaw, Poland. The aim of the pageant, which was the brainchild of two disabled mothers who run the Only One Foundation, is to change society’s perceptions of people with disabilities.

 

Lebohang is well known in sport and beauty circles. She was the first African woman in a wheelchair to be a runway model, an achievement that was part of her drive for disability inclusion. She also represented her country in wheelchair basketball and been part of the South African Wheelchair Basketball league.

 

Born and raised in Vryburg in the North West Province, Lebohang graduated from the NWU’s campus in Mahikeng with a Bachelor of Social Sciences in psychology in 2014. Her hope is for every aspect of life to be accessible to people with disabilities.

Lebohang makes South Africa proud at
