Plagiarism is an academic evil that is becoming an increasingly big problem for universities. The NWU has also seen a rise in the number of academic dishonesty cases involving plagiarism that are reported. Eish! spoke to Michelle Bownes, acting manager of student discipline and compliance at the NWU, about the relevance of this issue to staff.

lagiarism is a growing problem among
students as well. Carien Campher, senior
administrative assistant of the Student Discipline and Compliance department on the Potchefstroom Campus, says students need to be reminded of the seriousness of plagiarism as an academic transgression.
According to Carien, 26% of all the NWU’s student disciplinary cases of 2015 were plagiarism cases.
This is very concerning as there are on average
about 500 student disciplinary cases each year relating to academic dishonesty.
Standard copying and pasting from internet sources and digital study material is the most common form of plagiarism among students. “Some will, for example, take English text, translate it with Google Translate and use it in their papers. Their excuse is then that they used a dictionary to edit it and that is why they consider it to be their own work. This is of course still plagiarism.”
