As a best practice, leading universities around the world offer their alumni access to their libraries.

This will speed the registration process up: Cash payments and submitting your academic record as proof that you are an alumnus.

Should you lose your library access card, notify the library immediately by calling these numbers:

Mahikeng: 018 389 2198

Potchefstroom: 018 299 2800

Vanderbijlpark: 016 910 3170

Alumni get library access

Do you still remember the many hours you spent in the NWU’s libraries while you were students? Well, you can now relive that experience.

Our alumni can access the NWU libraries for only R400 per year, plus a once-off payment of R80 for an access card.

In order to borrow material or use the spaces in the NWU’s libraries, you should follow these steps:

Complete the external membership application form that you can find here (English and Setswana) and hand it in at any NWU campus library. (Hard copies of the forms are also available at the libraries.) If it is during office hours, the library staff will contact the alumni office to confirm your status as an alumnus. (You can also submit your academic record as proof that you are an alumnus.)

Instead of going to the library, you can also complete and print the online form, sign it and send the scanned form electronically to the library. Here are the email addresses:

Mahikeng: Nomzingisi Madikane at nomzingisi.madikane@nwu.ac.zaPotchefstroom: Njabulo Makhathini at FPBLEEN@nwu.ac.zaVanderbijlpark: Tiny Moripa at VTCLOAN@nwu.ac.za

The library staff will then confirm your status as an alumnus and let you know the outcome.

The next step is to pay your annual registration fee of R400. You can do this electronically (the banking details are on the application form) or at the cashiers at one of the campus libraries. (Unfortunately the libraries do not have credit card facilities.)

Should you choose to pay electronically, you have to submit proof of payment. As soon as the NWU Finance Department allocates your registration fee to the library, access will be granted. This may take a few days.

Once all the necessary verification has been done, you can apply for your library access card. This is how you do it: library staff will approve your membership application request and then you may submit your form to the campus’ Protection Services during office hours, so that they can issue a library access card to you at a cost of R80.

Show your access card at the library's security counter and go to the loan desk where you will be registered on the library system.

You can use your multipurpose card to access the library and to take out books. But remember: the card is not transferable – you are responsible for the books issued on it.

More detailed information about specific rules and restrictions is available on the membership application form.
