We braai, we celebrate and we give back …
Dear alumni
I hope this letter finds you in great spirits, much like the atmosphere we enjoyed at our Convocation Braais in August.
What a fantastic time we had on all three campuses, with the smell of braai fires in the air, the sound of laughter, and the sight of old friends reuniting and new connections being made.
It almost seemed that August was “Braai Month” at the NWU, and I must say, we certainly did justice to it.
From the young to the young at heart, everyone embraced the celebrations with singing, dancing and a whole lot of good cheer. It was the perfect way to honour our beloved NWU as we celebrate 20 years since the merger in 2004. What an incredible journey it’s been – one filled with growth, achievements and memories that will last a lifetime.
We’re immensely proud of how far we’ve come as an institution and even prouder of you, our alumni, whose accomplishments continue to inspire us.
The Convocation, as hosts of these three events, had the pleasure of seeing our members come together to celebrate and connect. Thank you to everyone who attended the braais and made them so memorable. Your presence made the celebrations truly special.
In our discussions, we’ve again emphasised the importance of the NWU Convocation as a governance structure. Next year will mark our triennial meeting, and I’m thrilled to share that we’ll be moving with the times. While we still encourage members to attend in person, we’ll also be introducing opportunities to nominate and vote online. More details will be shared once the meeting date has been set.
This is a significant step forward for us, allowing us to expand our audience reach and give more of our members the chance to participate, here and abroad. It’s a first for us, and we’re incredibly proud of the task team who has worked tirelessly to develop the processes for online voting. This will also give us all ample time to study the nominees before the meeting and to make informed voting choices.
This is a perfect moment to encourage our alumni to become members of the Convocation. For a once-off fee of just R50, you can become a lifelong member and ensure you have a say in the future of your alma mater by voting for the executive committee members at the Convocation’s triennial meeting next year. Attend, get involved and let’s continue to shape the future of the NWU together.
We also want to extend a sincere thank you to Mr Clement Manoko and his team in the Alumni Relations office who played a crucial role in arranging and contributing to the success of these events. They were the team behind the hosts who made it happen, and we are deeply grateful for their hard work and dedication.
Here’s to many more years of celebrating, connecting and making a difference together.
Warm regards
Bert Sorgdrager
