“This donation will finally allow me to complete my studies. I have been having a stressful academic year worrying about how I will pay the institution. I am one step closer to reaching my dream of becoming a computer scientist, all thanks to you.

“I hope I will one day become successful and help other students struggling with their fees and also those who need extra help to pass their matric.

It’s very rare to see a small-town child become someone of high calibre and I am given a chance to show every child from whatever background that it’s possible – and it’s all possible because of the donors.”

Winton Windell, senior fundraising specialist in the NWU’s Development and Fundraising department, says funds raised in this way are paid directly into the university account of the student.

“If a student has raised more than what is owed to the university, the extra money is reallocated to another student who still has outstanding tuition fees. In this way, community wealth is shared among as many students as possible to have greater impact.”

Easing their financial burden

Since the first disbursement received in October 2017, Feenix has supported 112 NWU students to the tune of R2 187 275.

“We are privileged to be able to assist in making tertiary education more accessible and affordable for students,” says Cara-Jean Petersen, chief executive officer at Feenix.

“Students are able to be actively part of their own solution by crowdfunding on Feenix for their studies among their family networks, and we also have a dedicated fundraising team that brings on board corporate donors looking to make a difference in the lives of students through skills development bursaries.”

If you or your children are registered at the NWU and are seeking an alternative way to fund your studies and graduate debt-free, click here to register on the platform and find out if you qualify for crowdfunding via Feenix.

Should you as alumni like to contribute to NWU students, you can do so directly on the Feenix website where you can search for NWU students or a specific field of study.
