Prospective students attending the Open Day on the NWU’s campus in Potchefstroom loved these big colourful sneakers.

Attending the Open Day held on the NWU’s campus in Vanderbijlpark, these learners couldn’t wait to take pictures with the giant tekkies.

Tekkies leave fun footprint on Open Days

Open Day might as well be called Opportunity Day. It’s where bright young minds meet their future and where a window opens on a new and exciting world.

On 6 and 13 May, the NWU’s campuses in Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark, respectively, held their annual Open Days for prospective undergraduate students.

Visitors at the undergraduate Open Days would probably have thought that Roald Dahl’s famed Big Friendly Giant was on the loose at the campuses, as giant sneakers adorned both sites.

Big friendly footprints?

“This year we wanted to use a unique marketing concept for all our brochures on Open Day,” Jimmy Pressley, digital media manager at Student Recruitment and Marketing, explains. “Sneakers or tekkies are universal and almost everyone owns a pair. It also allows the use of a lot of word play in our brochures and advertisements.

“We wanted a big, bright, relatable visual, so we manufactured massive sneakers with a frame where prospective students could take pictures. It was an invitation to say: ‘Put on your sneakers and come walk in the shoes of an NWU student’,” says Jimmy.

Wonderfully creative photos

This picture frame was also used in a competition where the most creative photo would win an NWU hamper. “All the visitors really loved it and we saw some wonderfully creative photos.”

Jimmy believes that the Open Day for prospective undergraduate students  to be held on 26 July on the NWU’s campus in Mahikeng will also be a huge success.

“We can’t wait to take the tekkies to the campus in Mahikeng. If the other two campuses are anything to go by, their prospective students are going to love it.”
