He is the alternate member of the Council’s executive committee for council member Francois Strydom, and is a member of the Remuneration Committee and the Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee.

  • There are currently 4 877 members on the Convocation Roll. The majority of them, 2 177, are from Gauteng, followed by 1 439 from the North West Province, 370 from the Western Cape and 256 from the Free State, among others.

Convocation had a busy, productive meeting

When a group only meets once every three years, the members have to make the most of the time. The Convocation tackled an extensive agenda on 11 March during the fourth triennial meeting on the campus in Potchefstroom.

Members of the newly elected executive committee of the Convocation are, in front from left, Werner Human (bursar), Bert Sorgdrager (president) and Nelson Mongale (deputy president). At the back are Karien Brits, Frik van Deventer, Adv Marlize Kruger and Cecil Ramonotsi. (Not in the picture: Paul Maritz).

The work included approving the Convocation’s constitution, electing a new executive committee, discussing the revision of the NWU’s language policy and plan, and learning interesting facts about the NWU and alumni affairs.

The Convocation’s constitution had to be approved after being revised to reflect the new NWU Statute. This was high on the agenda as the constitution is the cornerstone of the Convocation itself.

The newly elected executive committee is led by Bert Sorgdrager as president, Nelson Mongale as deputy president and Werner Human as bursar. The five additional members are Karien Brits, Frik van Deventer, Adv Marlize Kruger, Cecil Ramonotsi and Paul Maritz.

The revision of the NWU’s language policy and plan was discussed at length, with members raising their opinions and concerns. More information about how the NWU is revising the policy and plan is available in the article “Consultation is key in language policy revision”.

During the meeting Prof Dan Kgwadi, NWU vice-chancellor, spoke about the NWU’s performance and future strategic priorities. He also updated the meeting on the new NWU structure and the number of faculties we now have, and the dean appointments that have been made to date.

Dr Sammy Thekiso, the outgoing president of the Convocation, reported on the activities undertaken by the Convocation’s previous executive committee and shared strategic ideas for the future of the Convocation.

Bert Sorgdrager, the newly elected president and also the outgoing chairperson of the Alumni Association, reported on the Alumni Association’s activities for the period 2015 to 2017.
