Zinhle started playing volleyball during her school years, amid various sports activities.

“From athletics to ballroom dancing,” she reminisces, “ I tried different sports until volleyball’s teamwork and exciting gameplay drew me in. The synergy among teammates and the exhilarating pace of the game won me over completely.”

She has dedicated herself to volleyball for 20 years and her passion for the sport has only grown stronger. What started as a hobby has become a crucial part of her identity.

Women power in action

Zinhle is a member of the KAD Volleyball Club, representing knowledge, advocacy and development. This all-female volleyball club competes in tournaments at various levels, with the most prestigious ones organised by Volleyball South Africa.

Winning clubs at these events get the opportunity to represent South Africa in continental competitions such as the Confederation of African Volleyball Zone 6 championship, where six African nations face off.

KAD’s mandate transcends the confines of the court. Operating as a non-profit organisation, KAD thrives on sponsorships and community engagement.

Recent initiatives include organising a second-hand clothing drive for a school in Bryanston in support of Clothes2Good. Every Sunday, the club actively engages in youth development mentorship programmes with the junior team.

Furthermore, they champion female empowerment causes through discussions and collaborative projects.

“Participating in community and youth programmes has been crucial in my journey, enabling me to make a meaningful impact,” Zinhle says.

“The close bond within KAD goes beyond volleyball, shaping our shared identity and expanding our support network.”

Juggling her roles as a psychologist, PhD student and mother may seem daunting to some, but for Zinhle, it is a testament to prioritisation and passion.

“Sport is not merely a recreational activity. It is a regular part of my life and has become essential for my overall well-being and growth.”

Zinhle passionately encourages others to embrace their interests. She believes that sport, whether it is volleyball or any other activity, offers avenues for self-discovery, building communities and finding lifelong fulfilment.
