The NWU’s sporting prowess has been on full display throughout 2023.
Our rugby team, the NWU Eagles, soared to victory in Varsity Sports tournaments, while our footballers and netball players did us proud, narrowly missing a place in their respective Varsity Sports finals.
Now that the 2023 sports season has drawn to a close, NWU teams and fans can look back at a spectacular year.
In the FNB Varsity Cup rugby tournament held in April, the NWU Eagles won a convincing victory.
The championship showdown, staged at the Fanie du Toit Sports Ground in Potchefstroom, saw the Eagles beating the University of Cape Town. This was the first time the NWU Eagles have won the trophy since 2016, and the second time overall.
The NWU Eagles (Young Guns) emulated their older brothers and were crowned the Varsity Cup Young Guns champions after beating Maties in Stellenbosch.
Our netball and football players had to wait until late August to show their mettle, but it was clear that winter had done nothing to dampen their skills.
The NWU netball team showcased exceptional skill throughout the Varsity Netball competition, ultimately making it to the semi-finals, where they were narrowly edged out by the University of Johannesburg.
The standout star of the tournament was the NWU’s Sanmarie Visser, whose stellar performances in goal defence earned her the prestigious title of FNB Player of the Tournament.
Not to be outdone, on the football field, the NWU Eagles gave their games their all. Despite their elimination in the semi-finals by the University of Johannesburg, the NWU Eagles demonstrated remarkable resilience and skill.
Their seven-match journey in the Varsity Football competition featured two losses, two draws and three exhilarating victories, making them a noteworthy presence on the football scene.
In sport, it is impossible to predict what the next competition will bring, but one thing’s for sure: NWU sports fans have much to look forward to in 2024.
