The students expressed their gratitude for the bursaries. Leanne, a BEd distance student who recently became a mother, says the bursary helps a lot to alleviate the financial pressures of studying and looking after a family.
It was a highlight for Oratile to receive the bursary, especially with NWU mascot Eagi handing it over. “It will surely help a lot to cover some of my study fees. I think it is a great initiative and I hope that there will be similar help in future for students such as me who need assistance.”
Thoriso says he is very grateful for the bursary and it will definitely go a long way towards helping him with his honours studies.
Elvandré echoes the other students’ gratitude. “This truly means a lot, particularly for students such as myself who really struggle to finance our studies. It is hard for my family, especially for my mother who only receives a South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) pension which is our only source of income.”
Eagi presented the bursary to Elvandré Jantjies (third-year student in human movement and sports science) in Potchefstroom. With them are Zelda van den Berg and Onahh Seleke of People and Culture.
The NWU Way Values campaign is going from strength to strength with seven deserving students receiving bursaries as part of the drive.

Seven values, seven bursaries:
The bursaries are the result of a surprise announcement during the recent launch of the NWU Way Values campaign, where seven members of the NWU’s management teams that took part in the launch were identified as value champions.
Each value champion could identify a deserving student to receive a much-needed bursary to the value of R5 000 for book or class fees.
These bursaries were organised by People and Culture, the NWU’s bursary office and Corporate Relations and Marketing.
The NWU’s value champions are Prof Mpho Chaka (representing the value Transparency), Dr Elize Küng (Academic freedom and freedom of research), Clement Manoko (Excellence in all endeavours), Prof Rodney Medupe (Caring and inclusive), Prof Mirna Nel (Embracing diversity), Prof Sonia Swanepoel (Responsibility and accountability) and Prof Francois van der Westhuizen (Ethics in all endeavours).
The bursary recipients are Leanne Elizabeth Fitzhenry, Elvandré Jantjies, Moemedi Mmutle, Oratile Moloiswa, Thoriso Ntlailane, IB Raji and Gopolang Segopulo.
