Daleen Gerber, director of the subject group Mathematics and Applied Mathematics within the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, believes that the annual GeeXpo enables personal growth and academic distinction.

This year’s event, held on 14 October at the Vanderbijlpark campus , attracted more than 200 prospective students from schools across central South Africa. Apart from learning more about the latest developments in information technology, mathematics and statistical sciences, the learners had the opportunity to interact with subject experts and gain practical experience. By participating in various competitions, they could also test their knowledge and skills against those of their peers and win exciting prizes for themselves and their schools. Among the prizes up for grabs were study bursaries from the university’s campus in Vanderbijlpark, some worth more than R100 000.  Let’s look at the different competitions by clicking on each heading below.

PAT competition

The Practical Assessment Task competition or PAT, is one of the highlights of the expo. The competition runs parallel with the curriculum outcomes for high school learners (Grades 10 to 12) who have IT as a subject. Learners enter the competition by submitting their individual IT PAT projects. In this way, they can compare the standard of their projects against those of their peers. The competition also encourages talented learners to consider a career in IT.

The winners of the PAT competition are Seth Froneman (Potchefstroom Gimnasium), Matthew Townsend (Linden High School) and Johann Scheepers (Randburg High School) These Grade 11 learners walked away with bursaries for BSc studies in IT. With them is Prof Herman van der Merwe, the Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences.

IT Britehouse competition

Prof Herman van der Merwe, the Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, congratulates NWU student Zack van Nieuwenhuizen. Zack scooped first place in the IT Britehouse competition, winning a brand-new laptop and an IT honours bursary for next year.
