Staff keep going the extra mile

The NWU has dedicated staff who routinely go above and beyond the call of duty. In Eish!’s regular extra mile series, we compliment colleagues who do more than is expected of them.

If you would like to nominate a colleague who always goes the extra mile, please send an email to willie.duplessis@nwu.ac.za. Remember to include your job title and the name of your department or school, as well as those of the person whom you are nominating. Also give reasons why you think the person goes the extra mile.

Dr Sipho Kwatubana, senior lecturer at the School of Educational Sciences on our campus in Vanderbijlpark, says Amanda Smith, coordinator at the office for higher degrees, is always willing to help, and is friendly and approachable.

“Whenever people talk about good colleagues, I always think of her. She is very professional and always assists with a smile. This may seem insignificant to others, but a cheerful attitude such as hers is contagious.”

Dr PH Boer, senior lecturer in sport science at our campus in Mahikeng, commends Granny Mogotsi, personal assistant, and John Nchoe, faculty manager, for their hard work, friendliness and willingness to help.

He says Granny and John do great work at the School of Human and Social Sciences and make life better and easier for all their colleagues.

Marietjie du Toit, senior administrative assistant at the department of Social Work, is our pillar of strength,” says Tasleem Hassim, lecturer at the Faculty of Health Sciences on our campus in Potchefstroom.

“She is the glue that holds the department together. Marietjie is organised and assists the academic staff with everything.”

Tasleem says Marietjie arranges for their study guides and exam papers to be ready on time and reminds them of important dates. “She comes to work before all the other staff and leaves once everyone is gone. While we are under pressure, she assists us and sometimes brings cake to lift our spirits.”

Prof Salome Kruger of the Centre of Excellence for Nutrition on our campus in Potchefstroom says Ronel Benson, senior administrative assistant, and Henriëtte Claasen, financial officer, are shining examples of staff who go the extra mile.

“These two exceptional women are always on time and work until well after 17:00 on most days to ensure that everything is up-to-date at the centre.  They are always friendly even when there is a lot of work pressure.

“They always try to help even if staff are late in submitting applications, reports or other forms. The staff of the centre would like to commend them for being our stalwarts,” said Salome.
