Exploring our art
In this edition of our series on NWU artworks, we feature the leopard statue greeting visitors outside the Great Hall on the Mafikeng Campus.
Sculpted by Josua Nel and unveiled on 14 February 1991, this bronze statue was sponsored by big donors such as Anglo American, De Beers and Impala Platinum.
The leopard is an important traditional symbol of authority and royalty in the Tswana culture. In fact, for most South Africans it symbolises strength and courage.
