Rules and guidelines for hardware
Standard computers for NWU
As institution we have standardized on HP Compaq computer hardware. A standard computer is a tested and guaranteed computer bought from a specific manufacturer (currently HP Compaq). All the details of a standard PC’s components are stored in the supplier’s database. This standard applies to workstations, laptop and notebooks.
The following desktop, laptop and notebook models have been tested and approved by ITC. All the models listed on this site are fully supported by your local Campus IT department.

Computer acquisition
Although IT will provide you with advice regarding your purchase you have to purchase the computer directly through one of the suppliers mentioned below.
Users can purchase HP/Compaq computers from Eclipse Networks (Pty) Ltd, BlueTek or CSS Tirisano. The IT Standards Committee approved these suppliers and the University has a contract with each of these suppliers. The list of approved suppliers will be revised on a regular basis.
Orders can be placed directly at Eclipse Networks (Pty) Ltd, BlueTek or CSS Tirisano, and the supplier is responsible for the total delivery of the workstation to the user as well as the installation of the standard software. ITC will configure the IP address and apply the printer settings. The relevant campus IT Service Desk is responsible for first line support on all standard workstations.
The procurement tender for workstations is sent out in November every year. The tender price may be applicable to you, should you be able to wait until November.
Non Standard Computers
As a rule non-standard computers may not be connected to the NWU's network. Should such a need arise the Request for using non-standard PC’s or servers on the NWU network form must be completed and sent to the IT campus manager for processing.
Before buying a non-standard computer, you have to apply and have approval from IT to connect such a computer to the network.
If your request is adhered to a service contract has to be entered into with the supplier as ITC cannot support non-standard computers.
Replacement policy
There is no formal replacement or upgrade policy at the University but it is suggested to try and use a computer for a period of more than five years. There are however exceptions to this custom. Older computers are more difficult to support and maintain, and the increase in price of components is substantial. Normally the warranty on hardware is also limited to a three year period. The total cost of ownership thus rapidly increases after the fifth year.
